There are so many areas where things can go wrong making the project run over time or over budget. So, when your builder says “No problem” or “Too easy” or “She’ll be right mate!” and when he seems to just pull facts and figures out of his head ask this critical question: “Can I See Your Plan Please?”.
No, not the house plan. The activity plan your builder will use to make sure everything gets done in an organised way. If your builder doesn’t have a plan, chances are “she will not be alright!”
Remember what Confucius said: “A man who does not plan long ahead will find trouble at his door.” Or Benjamin Franklin put it this way: “He who fails to plan, plans to fail.” Don’t take the risk of trusting what your builder says off the top of his head. Ask to see his plan.
Professional builders should be able to show you the progress of your project, which tasks are completed and what is coming up next. You should be able to see how your budget is travelling and if there are any selections or variations that have had an impact on your finances. The plan should also include files and photos of your project as well as any messages or communication between all the parties.
The bottom line is renovating a home is a complex process. Your builder needs a plan. And you need to make the right choices along the way. Without the right guidance in finding a professional builder, it can become overwhelming and chaotic, taking all of the fun out of your project.
