Bathrooms have come a long way from closed off, tucked away spaces. In keeping with the trend that sees bathrooms as an antidote to stressful lifestyles, designers are pulling out the stops to allow homeowners more freedom to create highly personalised, accessible and comfortable spaces. With innovative smart technology and interior design tricks borrowed from the rest of the home, the modern bathroom is fast becoming a room that is aligned with the rest of the house.
Let’s dive into the key trends you need to know about with the experts at RUSCON.
Australians are no stranger to smart technology, and it makes sense that innovative products are being launched for the bathroom to help promote comfort, ease and, you’ve guessed it, sustainability. Indeed, two core themes from this year’s ISH, the biggest bathroom and heating trade fair in the world held once every two years in Germany, were ‘digital’ and ‘responsible’. We’re seeing smart app-controlled toilets, touchless flushers, intelligent lighting and sensory showers that are adding a new dimension to our washing spaces – from their sleek and minimalist designs to the bits and bytes that are hidden behind the scenes regulating individual settings, such as shower temperature and water usage.
New way to wash. According to Daniela Santilli, Reece’s bathroom business manager, technology in the bathroom is changing the way we use our bathrooms, especially the way we clean ourselves. Particular focus is on the toilet, take Roca’s In-Wash Smart Toilet, for example. Soon to be released in Australia, this design features personalised spray washing and an integrated fan to provide a more hygienic cleaning experience. “We wash our hands, faces and bodies with water to feel completely clean – so why has it taken us this long to adopt this behaviour in other areas of the bathroom?” Santilli says
Accent colours. Moody too much for you? Brighten up the look with accessories, furnishings or even a feature wall in on-trend powder pinks and emerald green.

A key theme from Salone del Mobile furniture and design fair in Milan this year was the longing among designers to create the classic new design icon. Simple forms from the past — which are now easier to produce — have been adapted for today’s tastes. An example of that is the redesign of an iconic model of Roca’s centenary history, the classically sculpted Carmen washbasin (pictured), sitting pretty in this heritage revival scheme alongside an equally decadent roll top bath and advanced modern features such as the easy-clean rimless toilet.
Round up. Round mirrors are having their time in the spotlight at the moment, a great way to soften the hard lines of a modern bathroom, and lovely to look at as well. A general rule of thumb is to choose a design the same width as, or slightly larger than, the basin, but don’t be afraid to have fun with different shapes and sizes.
Dark, moody colours have been around for a while; they’re a great fit for the bathroom, promoting luxury and deep relaxation. However this year has seen a shift. The 2017 ISH fair saw designers finding colour inspiration from the textural quality of materials: “Metallics are reaching new heights, with finishes like rose gold, gold, gun metal and brushed nickel reigning supreme,” Santilli says, pointing to the Metallic Dark Iron range by Alape for example. “Colour is no longer a finishing touch – it comes from within the design,” she says.

Geometric tiles continue to be popular this year, but are taking shape in a number of new ways. Fans of show-stopping designer pieces will love the new embossed bath in striking 3D geometric design, and if old-world glamour is more up your street, tune in for a treasure chest of warm, zellige tiles to hit the stores. There’s also an endless possibility of combinations that are offered to the imagination of the creator. Take these simple porcelain hexagon tiles, lined up to create a subtly striking feature wall that’s a pleasure to bee-hold.
Lean, green. We can’t talk about the evolution of our bathrooms without talking about the rise of wellness. “Being healthy starts at home and one of the first rooms we use when we wake up is the bathroom,” Santilli says. Don’t forget to include green, living plants in your wash space. Not only are they fashionable and beautiful but will add the sense of regeneration and recreation we’re going for.
Another key to healthier spaces is being smart with your storage. “While clutter often brings about a feeling of stress, there’s nothing quite like walking into a clean, mess-free space,” Santilli says. “Nooks, hooks, shelving and wall-hung vanities create plenty
Minimalist cabinetry. With bold tile patterns, colourful accents and quirky light fixtures playing a key role in bathroom decor, this year will see a range of minimalist cabinetry styles to balance it. Clean cabinets with simple knobs and handles ensure that the space doesn’t feel too crowded – no matter how big or small your scheme is – not to mention that it will make the scheme easier to clean, more hygienic and ultimately, healthier.
Every space we create is a reflection of timeless design, built with precision and intent. From structural integrity to finishing touches, our work is driven by a commitment to quality and lasting value.
